Following your dreams

You have to follow your own dreams in life, not the dreams that others have for you. Denying yourself to appease others is simply a waste of a life, if you ask me. Now, I’m not going to lie, those statements are bold, and truth be told, I’m writing this more as a reminder to [...]

Mark Hunt takes out Cheick Kongo in the first round at UFC 144

Mark Hunt made his name in combat sports in Japan, as he was a well-known and credentialed kickboxer. He thanked the Japanese fans with a quick knockout of Cheick Kongo at UFC 144.

The two tentatively felt each other out, but when Kongo came inside, Hunt met him with a huge left that sent Kongo flying. Kongo returned to his feet, then Hunt threw a right-left combo that wobbled his opponent. He followed it with uppercuts until Kongo's legs fell out from underneath him. The bout was stopped at 2:11 in the first round.

At 37 years old, Hunt now has three straight wins in the UFC and an overall record of 8-7. For Kongo, this loss stops him from getting a three-fight win streak.

Video: Ryan Bader knocks out Keith Jardine

Though he has a strong wrestling background, Ryan Bader has plenty of power in his hands. He showed this when he knocked out Keith Jardine in the third round of their bout at UFC 110.

Bader had a long undefeated streak that was stopped by eventual champion Jon Jones. Tito Ortiz added to Bader's troubles by submitting him at UFC 132.

He got back on the winning track with a first-round knockout of Jason Brilz in November. This weekend, he has another chance to show he's in the upper echelon of light heavyweights against Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Will he do it, or will Jackson get the win? What to look for: UFC on Fuel TV 1

The UFC rolls out its first major card debut tonight on Fuel TV in Omaha, Ne. Jake Ellenberger has a chance to work his way into the welterweight title mix with a big win over Diego Sanchez, but the card features much more beyond the main event (Fuel TV 8 p.m. ET).

The heavyweights are definitely can't miss this evening. Stefan Struve faces the division's great anamoly in Dave Herman. A chiseled 235 pounder Herman seems to fight with little strategy, but he is dangerous. He's mocked jiu-jitsu in the past. He'd better take it seriously against Struve, who has 15 submission wins in his 21 victories.

The other thing to watch for with Herman is what sort of look he brings to the Octagon tonight. Yesterday, he looked like a Russian lumberjack.

Ellenberger returns home

Sanchez will be walking into a road spot against Omaha's Ellenberger. The city is fired up for the return of the rising UFC star.

Today Ellenberger ? born and bred in Omaha and the assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha ? was presented with the Key to the City by David Dover, Deputy Chief of Staff to Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle. The former US Marine said: "I'm honored to be recognized by the city I grew up in and fight for. It's extra pressure to fight in your hometown with all your family and friends in the front row, but I know the support from the local fans will be awesome."

UFC looks to boost FUEL

The Fox deal was a no brainer for the promotion, but it does come with some early risks by using FUEL as its clearance house for programming.

Spike was in 100 million home. Fuel is still a work-in-progress with only 36 millions. That will get boosted into the mid-40's tonight due to a free preview this week. Unfortunately, like many young networks FUEL is fighting for clearance with cable companies. Comcast, the nation's biggest cable carrier, still doesn't offer the channel. That said, the Fox folks are enthused by the early uptick with the UFC partnership.

"We've had an 80 percent increase in the target demographic of men ages 18-49, and a near 230 percent increase in overall prime-time ratings from past ratings periods," Fuel TV vice president George Greenberg said. "To say I'm jacked would be putting it mildly."

Dillashaw needs a quick bounce back victory

The pre-show favorite for the 135-pound title on Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Dillashaw was surprised by the much smaller John Dodson in the final. He was finished on what he thought was a flash knockdown.

The powerful wrestler faces a challenge in the very rangy Walel Watson. He's not impressed.

"He's obviously going to be the tallest bantamweight I'll ever fight. He's got a long reach. Other than that, I don't find him too dangerous. Yeah, he's going to use his reach to his advantage, but he's not dangerous with it. He likes to stay on the outside obviously and use it to his advantage, but I'm not too impressed with his ground game or his [aggression]," Dillashaw told Sherdog.

The key phrase there is aggression. Watson's striking game can be dynamic, but he rarely sits down on his strikes. He is dangerous off his back which makes this fight really interesting since Dillashaw is probably going to look for the takedown and top control. He needs to be consistently active or he could get caught.

Tennessee fights canceled after liquor license denied

For good or bad, alcohol is a part of every MMA event. Whether it's fans getting liquored up in the stands or people flocking to bars to see pay-per-views, alcohol is part of the fight world. Fight organizers in Tennessee didn't want to find out what MMA would be without it.

Extreme Fight Night had to return $6,200 in sponsorship dollars after his permit was denied in Gallatin, Tenn. The city claims they didn't approve the permit because it was designated for non-profit organizations only.

"They (the attendees) will bring beer in their cars, they will be drinking in the parking lot ? we will have no control," said the company's marketing director, Christine Swartz, at the beer board hearing. "Whereas, if we sell beer within the venue, we have security; we can control that. If someone has more than one, or we think they're on the brink of a situation, we can physically have them removed."

The story ended well. Extreme Fight Night found another venue to run their fights that had beer. Fight fans had their cold beer in hand again. Phew.

Would you attend a dry fight? Tell us in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

?Rampage? Jackson growing weary of mixed martial arts

This weekend is a dangerous spot for Quinton Jackson. "Rampage" sounds less than motivated to face Ryan Bader and he admits he's sick of facing light heavyweights with a wrestling base.

"Sometimes it is hard to get motivated. Like when I fought Matt Hamill, I really wasn't motivated for that fight. At the end of the day, it's my job to fight," Jackson said. "I am kind of tired of fighting a bunch of wrestlers. I'd like to fight more striking-based fighters."

Jackson isn't getting his wish at UFC 144. Ryan Bader is a former All-American wrestler at Arizona State. His striking has gotten better, but he's already admitted there's little chance he's going to simply stand and bang with a guy like Jackson.

"I'm getting kind of bored with guys who want to take me down all the time. [...] I just want to excite people. I know fans are saying I'm one dimensional because i just try to knock people out. I just like knocking people out," said Jackson.

Who doesn't, right? But to do that a fighter has to be well-rounded enough to mix up his game, add to it and then improvise in the cage. Jackson doesn't seem to be adding much to his game at all. He's not a huge fan of training and he certainly isn't in the gym year-round working on his game. It sounds like he's already got his eye on his next challenge.

"The opponents I'm getting, a lot of people just want to take me down. I want to try and see how I'll do in both [boxing and MMA]. I haven't done boxing yet, so before I lay down the fighting, I want to try boxing," said Jackson.

At minus-260, Jackson is a big favorite in the fight.

Anthony Pettis, Hatsu Hioki impressive at UFC 144

Anthony Pettis was already known for one of the most memorable kicks in MMA history. He added to that legend with a left kick that knocked out UFC veteran Joe Lauzon at 1:21 in the first round of their bout at UFC 144 at Saitama Super Arena in Japan.

With that perfectly-placed kick, Pettis won his second fight in a row. After the fight was stopped, he jumped on top of the fence and gestured for the belt.

"Winning that fight is an amazing feeling. I was on a bit of a down streak in 2011, but 2012 is my year and I'm getting a title shot. I'm back, focused and ready to go, I didn't get touched. I think I confused him with my southpaw, had him biting on the jab then threw the high kick and it landed. I wanted to put on a good show for the fans because without them, I wouldn't be Anthony Pettis," Pettis said after the fight.

A title shot was supposed to be his after he won the WEC's lightweight belt in December of 2010. However, a loss to Clay Guida in June squashed those plans. Now, with an impressive knockout of Lauzon and a win over Jeremy Stephens, he's making a case that he belongs at the top of the UFC's stacked lightweight division.

Heading into the fight with Pettis, Lauzon was riding a high after stopping both Melvin Guilland and Curt Warburton in the first round. This loss sends him back to the drawing board.

Hioki wins over Palaszewski

In just his second UFC bout, Hatsu Hioki showed that he should be the next challenger for Jose Aldo's featherweight belt with a 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 dismantling of Bart Palaszewski.

In the first round, Hioki knocked Palaszewski down early. Palaszewski returned to his feet only to be taken down again. Hioki moved to side guard and threw repeated punches. To avoid strikes, Palaszewski gave up his back. As he tried to move out, Hioki pulled Palaszewski's arm into an armbar. He defended and moved out, but Hioki got back on top and threw several strikes. Palaszewski was more comfortable in the second round, keeping the bout standing. He was able to land more combinations than Hioki.

[Video: Watch Hioki-Palaszewski fight highlights]

In the third, Hioki brought the fight to the canvas immediately, taking down Palaszewski with a nasty trip. Hioki moved to side control and again used repeated shots to Palaszewski's head. When Palaszewski tried to escape, Hioki took his back. Palaszewski avoided the submissions, but Hioki's dominance was clear.

MMA Marketplace: Frankie Edgar?s walkout shirt takes on Benson Henderson?s

It's time to break down the most important part of Saturday's title fight between the champion, Frankie Edgar, and the contender, Benson Henderson. Which man has the better walkout shirt?

The champ brings an Affliction shirt that is thankfully free of gold foil accents and gargoyle heads. It still looks like an Affliction shirt because of the frayed edges and upside down fleur-de-lis, but doesn't burn the eyes the way other Affliction shirt can. Henderson's Dethrone shirt has heavenly undertones behind his nickname of "Smooth."

What really sets the shirts apart is their price. The Edgar Affliction shirt retails for a whopping $58, while the Henderson Dethrone shirt is is just $27.99. Two Henderson shirts cost less than one Edgar tee. The winner here is clear: Benson "Smooth" Henderson.

Quick strikes: Why Condit-Diaz 2 makes sense, Barao?s rankings, and Alvarez?s smart choice

*Dana White tweeted on Tuesday night that a Carlos Condit-Nick Diaz rematch will in fact take place. Wednesday, rumors abounded that the fight won't happen after all; as of the time of this posting, things remain murky.

But the bout makes sense on several levels. For one, the most optimistic scenario for Georges St-Pierre's return to the cage is November. In addition to GSP, Condit and Diaz, the welterweight division has vets like Josh Koscheck and Jon Fitch hanging around and up-and-comers like Jake Ellenberger and Johny Hendricks knocking on the door. A nine-month gap between Condit winning the interim title and challenging St-Pierre, which, again, is a best-case scenario, is a long time to have both guys with title belts on the sidelines when so many solid fighters are looking for their opportunity.

For another, as much as both Condit and Diaz's fans want to claim their guy won in a convincing manner, the margin of victory in their UFC 143 bout was razor-thin. The fact the decision is still the lead topic of conversation in MMA days later shows there's plenty of interest. Which leads to our final reason to make the match: Business. Condit-Diaz 2 is a surefire hit in a year in which the UFC has already had to scrap a planned Montreal date because of a lack of viable headlining bouts. Whether the rematch is a pay-per-view or UFC on Fox headliner, the match will attract attention along the lines of the biggest bouts of the year.

*Renan Barao moved up to No. 4 in MMAWeekly's bantamweight rankings after his UFC 143 win over Scott Jorgensen. Gaudy 28-fight win streak notwithstanding, I'm not convinced Barao is the next big thing at bantamweight. An inability to finish Jorgensen, in and of itself, is nothing to be ashamed of, as Jorgensen has only been stopped once in his career.

But Barao's pace slowed considerably starting around the midpoint of the fight, and that's not going to cut it if he's in the cage with Dominick Cruz for five rounds, or with Urijah Faber, for that matter. A matchup with Joe Benavidez, assuming Benavidez gets the win over Yasuhiro Urushitani on March 3, would be an interesting gauge of where Barao reallly stands among the bantamweight elite. (Update: I straight-up forgot Benavidez is going into the flyweight tourney. I still think he'd be a good match for Barao, though).

*Kudos to Eddie Alvarez for turning down entry into Bellator's next lightweight tournament and taking a date with Shinya Aoki instead. The bout takes place April 20 at a location yet to be announced. Alvarez's decision puts the spotlight on what's going to be a kink in Bellator's tourney system going forward: Why should Alvarez have to fight his way through three opponents just to get another crack at the championship?

Tourneys are a great way for an up-and-coming fighter to gain exposure, but when you've already made a name for yourself, as Alvarez has, there's little to gain and tons to lose. Alvarez needs to stay sharp in the wake of his title loss. He'll have a far bigger test of his skills fighting someone the caliber of Aoki, and will have more motivation in attempting to avenge his 2008 submission loss, than he would in slogging his way through another tournament.

TUF 1 alums Quarry and Florian looking for smooth transition to broadcasting

Once the crowds and competition are gone for athletes there's only a few ways to stay in the game. If you're not coaching then the other option is broadcasting. As organized MMA reaches its 20-year mark, more and more fighters are beginning the transition into the media.

Guys like Frank Trigg and Bas Rutten began the process a while back and now we're seeing some of the more recent UFC veterans working towards the next phase of their lives. Kenny Florian and Nate Quarry have a bonds of sorts. They'll always be part of the special crew that made up Season one of "The Ultimate Fighter" back in 2005. Now they've got something else in common. They're fighters turned broadcasters.

Quarry debuts tonight on Spike TV as one of the hosts of "MMA Uncensored Live" at 11 p.m. ET/PT. He says his show with radio host Craig Carton and MMA video interviewer Mike Straka will break the mold.

"It seems on the radio you get a lot more guys who give their opinion and talk about who they want to win. but as soon as they transfer from radio to TV it's like watching paint dry. Everyone's afraid to get excited about the fight and talk about who they think is going to win," said Quarry.

Quarry, 39, brought it pretty strong on several topics during a discussion on ESPN1100/98.9 FM. He spoke candidly about his former division and its champ.

"I'm sure he's been making so much money over the past few years and then you convertt that to Brazilian dollars, he's probably set for two or three lifetimes," Quarry said. "[...] Why would he necessarily want to go back into a three or fourth month fight camp, always in pain, always have to wake up and train when you've done so much already? There comes a point where he's saying "you know what? I've got enough money. I've got enough fame. My country loves me. I've set plenty of records.'"

Quarry thinks a victory over Chael Sonnen this summer could be the end of the road for Silva.

Meanwhile, Florian is under the UFC banner working for Fuel TV. His initial foray into broadcasting came with ESPN as part of its "MMA Live" show. Now his role's a bit different as the live fight analyst on Fuel TV. Florian, 35, knows the sport, can articulate the complicated aspects of it and will be critical when necessary. But he's not going to shred fighters, because he's been there.

"I hated it when I got critiqued as a fighter. So much goes into a fight that people never see, the countless hours of training, the diet, dealing with injuries. The worst feeling in the world, for me anyway, is to lose. Knowing how I felt, it's been hard for me to rip apart a guy after his fight," Florian told SI.com.

MMA is going to be well represented by a slew of former fighters who'll probably enter the media side of things over the next few years. Brian Stann made his TV debut at the Fuel TV 1 card and in just one showing exhibited the potential to be a top of the heap media personality.

The odd path Benson Henderson and Anthony Pettis took to UFC 144

Two former WEC champions will appear on Saturday's UFC 144 card. Benson Henderson, the man who held the lightweight for more than a year, will fight Frankie Edgar for the UFC lightweight strap. Anthony Pettis, the man who took Henderson's title with the jaw-dropping "Showtime Kick," will take on Joe Lauzon.

Those MMA fans who have been living under a rock since December 16, 2010, when Pettis beat Henderson, might wonder how it's Henderson, not Pettis challenging Edgar.

[ *Watch UFC 144 right here on Yahoo! Sports ]

After winning the WEC belt in their final event before being absorbed by the UFC, Pettis was supposed to get the next UFC lightweight title shot. He was supposed to fight the winner of Edgar and Gray Maynard's New Years Day 2011 bout.

But Pettis was put on the backburner when Edgar and Maynard's bout ended in a draw. Their rematch was more important than unifying the WEC and UFC belts. Pettis opted not to wait for a title shot, and lost a decision to Clay Guida in June.

For Henderson, it was a win over Guida -- plus beatdowns of Jim Miller and Mark Bocek -- that earned him the title shot at Saitama Super Arena this weekend. No fighter wants to lose, particularly when his belt is on the line, but the loss to Pettis still bothers Henderson. His laid back strategy late in the bout still makes him angry. Was it the best thing to happen to him?

"It was heart-wrenching," he said to MMA Fighting's Ben Fowlkes. "I was sad, and I'm still sad. It was heart-breaking. ...Every time I'm out there, I give you guys everything. I open up my heart and soul. I hold nothing back. To come up short, and to come up short in that manner, that hurt. But I'll never let that happen again."

Even Pettis has noticed the difference in his former opponent.

"Ben was on a tear. He was killing guys in the WEC. Then I come in there, we go five rounds and I win the decision, and he was back to square one. I think a loss makes everyone a little hungrier, and that's what it did for him."

Pettis beat Jeremy Stephens in October. He will fight Lauzon early enough on Saturday's card that, if healthy, he can sit in the crowd and watch Henderson take on Edgar. At just 25, Pettis has plenty of time to get back to a title fight, and what could serve as better fuel than watching the man he beat take the title shot Pettis was supposed to get.

UFC on FUEL TV 1 weigh-in: Sanchez looks healthy at 170 pounds

Diego Sanchez was the man to watch during today's UFC on FUEL 1 weigh-in.

In this ever evolving sport, welterweights are getting bigger and bigger. At 5-foot-9 Sanchez is small for the weight. He looked bloated on fight night for his battle last March against Martin Kampmann. This afternoon, he looked much healthier.

Sanchez explained to USA Today that he screwed up the weight cut before the Kampmann fight.

The last fight for Martin Kampmann, I really messed up on the diet. I didn't cut out salt. I didn't cut out carbs. I ended up having to cut 14 pounds the day of the weigh-ins. That's three hours of cardio and another 30 minutes in the sauna.

Sanchez said it cost him late in the fight when he couldn't pour it on.

I felt it in the fight, and even though I still was able to fight hard and put a hard pace, if I would have done the weight cut properly, I would have been able to press the fight even harder in the second and third rounds and, I believe, finished the fight.

So there's no excuses for Sanchez and that means a victory for Jake Ellenberger is worth that much more.

Carlos Condit responds to Nick Diaz?s positive drug test

Nick Diaz's positive drug test sent both the UFC and Carlos Condit's plans flying. While they were planning a rematch of the two's razor-close UFC 143 decision, Diaz's positive test was announced and the fight was forgotten.

Condit told Sports Illustrated he was looking forward to the rematch both because he thinks he would win and because he wants to win fights. It doesn't bother him that Diaz had marijuana in his system as much as it does that he would put their bout in danger.

"I don't care," Condit said. "The thing about it is, it's something they test for. It's against the Nevada Athletic Commission [rules]. I don't really consider it to be a performance-enhancing drug, but the fact is, they're testing for it. And you know they're testing for it. Whatever you do in between camps, if you know they're testing for this stuff then you've got to figure something out. In the past, he's said, 'Oh, I can smoke and I can pass these tests no problem.' That attitude kind of came back and bit him in the ass."

No matter what your feelings are on marijuana, its legality or its place in society, Diaz was well aware that state commissions test for it. He was already busted for it once. Once you get a ticket for speeding down a street, do you speed down that street again?

Anderson Silva goes 1-2 with Amazonian tribesman

Above, you can see longtime UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in a clinch with the member of an indigenous tribe in Brazil. According to the good people at Sherdog, he was taping a television show while visiting the Kamayura people in an inland state of Brazil.

While there, he worked out with a tribe member in their traditional combat sport of the huka-huka. He was beat twice under their rules, but then won when allowed to use jiu-jitsu.

Silva used the filming as a learning experience.

"It's different, the way they fight, the kind of technique they use," enthused Silva. "They are very strong, and I really enjoyed the experience. Really cool."

At 36 years old, Silva is still going out and learning new techniques and ways to dominate at MMA. He does not stop getting better as a fighter, even when he's at the top of his game. Hopefully, he'll continue to travel the world to learn every martial art and we'll see him try Senegalese grappling, Turkish oil wrestling, and Black Friday shopping in any mall in suburban America.

Machida, Jackson or wait: What to do with Dan Henderson?

Dan Henderson appears to be a man with a world of options. Comfortable at both light heavyweight and middleweight, his winning streak and credentials in both Strikeforce and the UFC qualify him for a title shot. After his epic bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Henderson said he wanted to try for a title at whatever weight is first.

[Related: Y! Sports pound-for-pound rankings]

Unfortunately for Henderson, the light heavyweight belt will be contested in April, and the middleweight belt is up for grabs in June. He is involved in neither fight. The UFC's solution was to offer him Lyoto Machida, a former champ who most recently lost to Jon Jones in December.

"He doesn't want to fight Machida," [UFC president Dana] White said following Wednesday's UFC on FUEL event. "He doesn't want to wait. He's going to have to wait. Who does he want to fight? I don't know what to do with Dan. Dan's either going to have to wait for Jones or wait for Silva. Or fight somebody else."

Except, Henderson says he was never offered that bout. Via his Twitter account, Henderson disputed White's words.

Was never offered Machida. And even though he has lost 3 out of his last 4, I'm sure it would be entertaining.

Who to believe between the two? Though, as Henderson says, a bout with Machida could be interesting for fans to watch, it doesn't make any sense for Henderson. Dating back to when he held the belt, Machida has losses to Rua, Jones, and Quinton Jackson. His one win was over a retiring Randy Couture.

[Video: Watch Jon Jones get attacked by a police dog]

A win over Machida would get Henderson no closer to the title shot. MMA Fighting's Mike Chiappetta suggests that Henderson takes on the winner of next week's bout between Ryan Bader and Jackson. Though a win over Jackson would avenge a loss on Henderson's record, it could also jeopardize a chance to win a belt off Silva or Jones.

As much as it pains Henderson to sit idle, his best bet is to wait. What would you do in Henderson's shoes? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.
